Installing storm shutters to help reduce potential windstorm damage, installing smoke detectors to warn one of the possible threat of fire damage, and installing sprinkler systems to reduce potential fire damage are all examples of a homeowner’s attempt to lessen the extent of or avoid potential damage to their home.

Preparing one’s home from the threat of possible wind damage is one approach for mitigating against the magnitude of destruction. The threat in this case extends from possible damage associated with heavy wind, rain, and windstorms. Homeowners can install features that will help to protect their home against these forces. The presence of these features could qualify one for discounts on their homeowner’s insurance premium. Wind mitigation inspections provide insurance companies and the homeowner with detailed information about the features installed to protect the home against wind related damage. Wind mitigation inspections provide information about these common features:

  • Roofing material and underlayments
  • Shutters and panels for windows
  • Roof deck and wall attachments
  • Door protectants and panels
  • Roof geometry

The wind mitigation inspection should be completed by a vendor acceptable to EPIC. Inspections should be completed by inspectors that meet Florida licensing requirements.

There are two inspection forms that are acceptable to EPIC. Those forms are:

  • Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR- B1- 1802). This form is utilized for:
    • Single family dwellings
    • One to four unit residential dwellings including apartment buildings and condominiums
    • One to three story residential structures including apartment buildings and condominiums.
  • Building Type II and III Mitigation Verification Affidavit (MT- BT II & III). This form utilized for residential buildings and structures that are four or more stories including apartment buildings and condominiums.
